Fort McMurray is one of the areas that belong to Alberta and Canada’s centre of oil hub. It has two large corporations engaged in sand oil mining. On that note, the demand for crane operators is fairly high. The usual salary of a crane operator is at $30 per hour and this is just the average. There are some qualifications that companies desire for in applicants for this job.
There are the so-called licensed crane operators and non-licensed crane operators. As could be inferred from the term, a licensed crane operator is someone who has received adequate training and has obtained a certificate of completion. The training is an apprenticeship program that is administered through the initiatives of certain organizations and institutions such as listed crane contractors associations and the International Union of Operating Engineers. While the nature of the job is primarily lifting, hoisting, and moving of materials, there are skills required to enable the individuals to properly manage the task. These individuals are trained to develop such skills necessary as well as provide knowledge on how to best handle the cranes. Cranes come in different types, and each machine requires the proper amount of control and manipulation. A good cane operator must be able to judge spaces accurately, apply good regulation of the forward and backward movement of the crane, and know proper hoisting in terms of how fast the material is to be hoisted to prevent snapping of cables, among other things. These tasks can all be learned from the training.
Educational attainment, age, and other qualities
The minimum educational requirement desired for this kind of job is a high school diploma. Completion of high school is also a minimum qualification to anyone who wishes to receive training in crane operations. The age requirement is at least seventeen (17) years old. As crane operations may involve working at high altitudes, any individual who eyes this job should be able to deal with heights. Having strength and excellent health conditions are also required.
