If you’re leaning toward a career in public health or environmental health, then a public health inspector job is a practical first step. If you have a degree in public health or a Canadian certificate in Public Health Inspection, you can get compensation for full time regular work at a maximum of $40. Inspector positions requiring a degree or certificate also need at least two years of experience in environmental health and knowledge on public health laws. The job requires inspection of a fixed premises on a regular basis, reviewing developmental proposals, health education and advice to the public, and investigating communicable disease and food borne illnesses. Since the position requires you to visit sites for inspection, a valid driver’s license is usually required. You may also be expected to have your own vehicle. More experienced applicants could be expected to train workers in the food sector. If this is included in the job qualifications, those with very good communication and presentation skills have an advantage.

Relevant work experience

Other health inspection jobs require work in a hospital or other health institutions. These usually require you to investigate disease outbreaks and food poisoning. Knowledge on collecting sample materials for analysis is an integral skill for the job. Establishments deemed unsanitary to operate will require you to charge fines or enforce closing procedures.
